A faulty Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor in a Land Rover TD5 can cause a number of issues, including:
- Rough idling: The engine may vibrate, surge, or idle poorly
- Hesitation or stalling: The engine may hesitate or stall when accelerating
- Reduced power: The engine may have reduced or flat power
- Poor fuel economy: The car may have reduced fuel efficiency
- Engine misfiring: The engine may misfire
To test a TD5’s MAF sensor, you can use live data to check the reading at idle and at 2000 rpm:
-
Idle
The reading should be between 55-61. If it’s 4.00 or 0, the MAF is faulty and needs to be replaced.
-
2000 rpm
The reading should be between 185-200. If it’s less than this, the MAF’s scaling factor is faulty and needs to be replaced.
A MAF sensor typically lasts between 80,000 and 150,000 miles. Cleaning and properly maintaining the MAF sensor can help prolong its life. Also, by disconnecting the MAF Sensor and running the vehicle, if it appears to run better this can also indicate a MAF out of range, as the ECU cannot get a reading from the disconnected MAF sensor it runs a default setting, often the vehicle will run better, produce more smoke as the air fuel mixture will not be optimum, a MAF sensor should not be disconnected for long periods of time! A healthy MAF will give a consistent air fuel mixture throughout the rev range.
